"Allerhand Zierrathen" (All Kinds of Decoration) – Baroque Treasures

Count Carl Ludwig

In 1708 the earldom of Hohenlohe-Weikersheim had been bestowed upon Count Carl Ludwig of Hohenlohe (1674-1756) as the new "Landes-Vatter" (sovereign lord). He immediately ordered the remodeling of Weikersheim Palace, which had been built approximately 100 years before.  In the palace wing facing the town, today known as the "Langenburger Building (Langenburger Bau), he had residential rooms furnished for himself and later for his second wife, Princess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie, born Princess of Oettingen-Oettingen (1691-1758), at great expense.

The royal chambers were adorned with stuccowork on the ceilings and textile wall decorations and furnished with beautiful furniture. Countless decorative treasures, such as Asian and European china, faiences, miniature paintings and superbly handcrafted pieces of small furniture, completed the representative appointments.

The permanent exhibition on display in the Kitchen Building of Weikersheim Palace since March 2007 presents selected examples of these valuable, unique furnishings from the apartments of the count.

The best pieces of the outstanding, multifaceted Weikersheim ceramic collection can be admired close up in the permanent exhibition. Several groups of ceramics with a broad range of origins are on display. They impart a vivid impression of the royal passion for collecting in the early 18th century. A highlight are the faiences of the Ansbach Feyencemanufaktur, of which more than one hundred objects from all phases of production in Weikersheim have been preserved, in particular valuable pieces of the so-called "Green Family".

courtly diversion

The courtly works of art are supplemented with informative, illustrated text panels. These provide visitors with an insight into the world of Baroque fashion, the diversions of the counts and the dining culture in Weikersheim. The precious Baroque objects and their history (stories) make the 18th century court of the counts come alive.
